I have been riding motorcycles since 1984 when I was only 8 years old. I started out on a 1984 Honda CR60 which I still have in mint condition. I would ride it all over the place outside of Manvel, TX. I think it was 1986 when I moved overseas to Karachi, Pakistan at which point I was only there for a short time, but I was able to ride that little CR60 a few times while there. I then was sent back state side to live in GA with my Grandparents. They had two 1976'ish Suzuki Dualsports, I believe they were 90cc and they had a 1984 Honda moped. I rode the dualsports and the moped everywhere in GA, and NC. My grandparents lived in the middle of the Blue Ridge mountains outside of Mineral Bluff, GA. Back then no one cared, I would take mostly logging roads and dirt roads to explorer new places. A few times I jumped on the local Highways. Times were so much simpler then.
Jump forward to 1999 while I was at Michigan State University I decided to purchase a 1999 Kawasaki Ninja EX250 in bright green and purple. After buying the motorcycle I went down and took the State road course exam and the written exam. The first week I had the motorcycle I decided to go visit a buddy at VA Tech (Blacksburg, VA) so I rode the bike down taking back roads and small highways. Nothing like doing a 600 mile trip on a new motorcycle that you only had for a week. After meeting up with my buddy who had a Suzuki Intruder 700 at the time we went out riding for a few days. Then I headed back to MI to take the bike into the dealer for the first service. The dealer could not believe his eyes that I had about 2K miles within a week and a half on the little Ninja.
I held onto that Ninja for years. In January 2001 I was considering buying a Suzuki Bandit 1200 when I saw the then new 2001 Yamaha FZ1 that was to come out. Without seeing the bike and without sitting on it, I went down to my local dealer and paid cash/deposit for the first Blue FZ1 the local dealer would get in. I was first on the list, so I got to pick the color (Black or Blue). I picked the blue as I heard it was faster. In March 2001 the dealer got in the blue FZ1. In fact I started the FZ1OA with Eric (Long story and I rather not talk about it), but I grew that site to 2,500 members before leaving.
I had some ups and down with the bike, like speeding tickets, flat tire in the rain and snow. I was about to hang it up but am lucky that I never went through with selling the FZ1. I still owned the little Ninja and would ride it from time to time. My girlfriend (now wife) used it for a summer while back from College. She went and took the MSF course and passed. Having two motorcycles has its advantages, I was able to do a east coast motorcycle trip with that buddy who lived in Blacksburg, VA (now living in the Bay Area of CA). Also during this time I went out to CA and used his Intruder 700 once for a 3,000 mile trip when he bought a Yamaha VMax, then again when he bought an FZ1 I went out and used the Yamaha VMax for another 3K miles. Having two motorcycles seems liek the best path to follow if you can.
However all good things come to an end, so in 2002 I sold the little Ninja EX250 for a bargin price ($1,400) to pay for a trip with the girlfriend to Salt Lake city to see the winter Olympics. I have always missed that little bike, it was a lot of fun to ride, and to ride hard. Like they say it is funner to ride a slow bike fast then a fast bike slow.
In 2005 the now wife and I decided on her getting a 2004 Honda 599 so that she could ride once again. We were living in Grand Blanc, MI at the time and I was getting tired of the local roads as they were as flat as they come. I was cutting back on the amount I rode locally, as it was just plain boring. Then in 2007 the wife gets a new job offer out in Colorado Springs, CO and I tell her to take it. We move out to CO and I been reborn by having fun exploring new roads and new location.
